VISUAL APPRAISAL OF THE HORSE AT REST
Checking for Conformation:
Observe the horse at the trot to determine the following:
1. Does the horses head bob when the horse is trotted towards you? (The more pronounced the bob, the more severe the pain
is.) The horses head bobs UP when a sore forelimb hit’s the ground. The horses head will bob down when a sore hind limb
hit’s the ground. YES OR NO IF YES, PLEASE GIVE DETAILS OF FINDINGS.
2. Does the hip on one side raise HIGHER and or/sinks LOWER than the other side when the horse is trotted away from you?
YES OR NO IF YES, PLEASE GIVE DETAILS OF FINDINGS.
3. Does the toe drag of the affected hind limb on the forward swing? YES OR NO IF YES, PLEASE GIVE DETAILS OF FINDINGS.
4. Does the stride on one leg appear to be shorter than the stride of the other legs? YES OR NO IF YES, PLEASE GIVE
DETAILS OF FINDINGS.
LOCATING THE LAME LEG: (Only use the lame leg exams if you suspect injury or lameness!)
1. Examine horses legs and feet for external evidence of injury. Standing horse squarely on solid, level ground, then visually
examining each leg and coronary band for bumps, swellings, wounds, discharges. ARE THERE ANY SIGNS HERE? YES OR NO IF YES,
PLEASE GIVE DETAILS OF FINDINGS.
Feel each hoof for excess heat, then check the strength of the horses digital pulse. Do all legs have a faint or strong
digital pulse? (You want to have a faint digital pulse for a normal leg.)

would indicate pain in another foot, hence the reluctance to increase the load there.
Please fill out the chart as to your observations of each leg.
