Why would you want to have a Breeding Soundness Exam for your mare? There are several good reasons for this exam. For the
mare, we do a thorough visual exam, which we look at her external physical condition, internal exam, where we do an assessment
of the inner membranes to make sure she is capable of carrying a foal, an ultrasound which is done to detect any cysts or
other problems that the other parts of the exam have missed, and we do a hormonal assessment. Hormonal assessments are done
by blood test and it's done to make sure she has no hormonal imbalances. For the stallion- we again do a thorough exam of
his general body condition where we check his eyes, teeth, check for injuries and lameness, and also check his limbs. (Bad
limbs could make it difficult for the stallion to breed properly.) We also do checks thru examination for current/recent infectious
diseases, we do lab tests to see if your stallion tests positive for EIA/EVA. A urinalysis and Complete Blood count are done
to see if there are any abnormalities that have been missed in the physical part of the exam. We do an internal exam and a
Trans-rectal Ultrasound to evaluate the internal reproductive tracts. There is also a sperm count done and a sample of the
blood is taken for a test for venereal diseases.
A stallion can pass all parts of the exam and test positive for a
venereal disease, and he will fail the Breeding Soundness Exam. Any type of venereal disease can be transmitted to the mare
and the foal. Which in turn, can cause more horses to be infected.
This is one exam that I highly recommend for all
breeding pairs to have. It is great to know whether or not you have a good breeding pair and whether or not they are healthy
enough to even be bred. I hope that you understand my explanation of WHY you should have the BSE done for your breeding pair.
When you choose to have the BSE, you will get a complete report about the health of your mare and stallion.
Please forward the following information to us. Do this to the best of your ability.
The Mare
-Who are the mare's parents?
-When did she last have a foal?
-How many times did it take for her to get pregnant?
-Was her last foaling normal or difficult?
-Tell me about her diet and exercise program. Have you noticedany changes in her weight while on her routine diet?
-When was the last time she was vaccinated? What vaccines was she given?
-What is her deworming schedule? When was the last time she was dewormed? If known, what dewormer was used?
-Have there been any previous illness or injuries?
-Do you think your mare could be dangerous around a stallion during breeding? (Kick, bite etc.)
-If you have previous BSE reports or any information that you'd like to share with us, please also include that here.
The Stallion
-Who are the stallions parents?
-When was the last time he was vaccinated?
-What vaccines was he given?
-What is his deworming schedule? When was the last time he was dewormed? If known, what dewormer was used?
-What is his feeding and exercise routine like?
-How did he perform with his last breeding? (artificial or mounted?) If there were problems, please include that here.
